The most popular apps of our era

Simplicity is the Ultimate Download

We’re easy to please. Simple things please simple minds and all that. We like routine, similarity and habits. The minority of us like a constant change of scenery and want to hippy ourselves out of the hamster machine but generally, we want to feel comfortable and not have to think too much about things and stuff.

That’s why we procrastinate; try and find things to occupy our mind so that we can extend our down time. This is why apps are so god damn successful. The “yeah, I’ll do it later.” mentality is being fed and supported by mobile applications.

The App Culture

It’s always been consumer driven – isn’t everything measured by consumption? But if we look at the level of their success, it is a clear indication that we like to appeal to our social networks and want to keep hold of our youth.

But what does this mean?

It means that we are easily bamboozled. The buy now pay later deal still works. If it’s free now, we won’t mind paying later if it means we get more of what we never new we wanted in the first place.

It means we are show offs and perfectionists. We like taking pictures, sharing our lives and turning the mundane into front page news stories.

It means we are nosy, scroll down and keep scrolling, there is no end and you will not find the bottom of the bottle because code and numbers are infinite. There are no limitations to your babies face, the dog walking, the plane tips, your lush roast dinner, the hipster coffee shops and the red lipped festival fashionistas.

It means we want to be Peter Pan. We like nostalgia and the power that gaming brings us and if we can step into the shoes of our seven year old self we will. Bring on Candy Crush Saga!

Apps are such an intrinsic element in the sincrisity between our genetic and digital make up that they’ve become a dominant force in our lives. The milestones keep on advancing but are we – the users – the ones influencing it?

If we are the hype the app developers are looking for then what is it about us that make these apps so successful? Is it our affection for escapism, the simple life, ego and gossip?

As app developers, this tells us that the market is incredibly lucrative. If we can gamify the apps that justify the users social life in complete digital satisfaction; if we can build tension and keep them scrolling for more.
